Baptism in the Parish of the Upper Skerne
We’re delighted you want to come to church to celebrate the precious life of a child. Bringing a child for baptism is a serious decision to make and we take it seriously, too giving time and effort to make the occasion as meaningful and memorable as we can.
This information is to help you understand the meaning of Baptism. It is important that you read it carefully and understand it, so please feel free to ask any questions.
THE BAPTISM SERVICE contains serious promises which ask parents and godparents to bring up their child in the Christian way of life and the following requirements reflect this:
Parents are also invited to attend a Sunday service sometime before the baptism, so they get to know the church and its style of worship - and to meet church members.
In choosing godparents we ask that you give this serious thought since, ultimately, they are the people who will be making religious promises on their own behalf as well as the child’s. Therefore, godparents should be baptised themselves and mature enough to understand the commitment they are making.
Adult Baptism. If any adults are interested in being baptised, we would expect them to attend worship regularly beforehand; please ask whoever makes your booking to put you in contact with the clergy.
What to do next
If you wish to book a baptism you will need to please come along to our vestry hour, from 5.30pm -6.30pm on Wednesdays. This will alternate between St Edmund’s in Sedgefield and St Mary Magdalene’s in Trimdon Village. The second Wednesday of the month at Sedgefield and the fourth Wednesday at Trimdon
The Mums Charity. We will ask the mum of the child being baptised to nominate a charity that is close to her heart or is important to the family. There will be a collection at the end of the service. Fifty per cent of the collection will go to the chosen charity and fifty percent will stay with the Church and go towards funding our own work with families and young people.
You are welcome to take as many photos and videos as you like at the end of the service.
